The cities of the Itria Valley stand on the hilly area of Puglia’s hinterland, an area rich in culture, history and tradition, which preserves the ancient uses and flavors of a vast zone rich in vineyards and olive groves.
Among the oldest and most historic cities of the Itria Valley stands the city of Ostuni, also known as “The White City“, standing a few kilometers from the sea. This nickname derives from the typical painting of its buildings, rigorously painted with white lime (with the double function of blinding enemies and, the most important one, of disinfecting streets and houses thanks to the power of lime). Not to be missed is the festival dedicated to the patron saint and protector of the city, Sant’Oronzo, when a wonderful parade of horses in the streets of the historic center and the spectacular fireworks represent moments of jubilation for the whole city.
Getting lost in the alleys of the historic center of Ostuni is really a pleasure, as you can discover everywhere churches, museums, restaurants, bars, where you can cool off on hot summer days and enjoy a breathtaking view while enjoying a traditional aperitif.
The Itria Valley, however, preserves another and very important jewel known and renowned all over the world for the uniqueness of its buildings: we are talking about the city of Alberobello and its trulli, famous because “Unesco World Heritage Site” and emblem of the typicality of Puglia and of how the conical constructions of trulli have now become one of the most sought after historic buildings by tourists from all over the world. Enjoying a walk along the alleys of a fairytale landscape is absolutely one of the experiences to do in life.
Not to be missed are the cities of Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Ceglie Messapica, with their unique and characteristic historical centers, where you can taste the famous “bombette”, a typical dish of the Apulian culinary tradition and explore the ancient monuments of centuries ago.
